(1) WHAT IS GNA?
GNA is a non-profit corporation incorporated in the state of
Texas since November 1993, affiliated with the Usenet University
project. Its long-term goal[25] is to create an fully accredited
online university. To reach this goal it has short term plans
for 1993-94[26]: the fall '93 semester was devoted to
establishing the basic educational, technical and administrative
infrastructure. By summer 1994, GNA shall have released a press
release, a newsletter, and a catalog of classes[27] to be taught
in Spring '94 or later.
GNA is also the world's first virtual corporation, and therefore
serves as a testbed for running organizations in the 21st
century. It shall also be an "umbrella"[28] bundling educational
Internet initiatives and easing the interaction between
professionals worldwide.
(2) WHICH INITIATIVES ARE LIVING UNDER THE GNA UMBRELLA?
If you are interested to contribute to any of these, don't
hesitate to contact the address given.

(3) WHERE CAN I FIND MORE INFORMATION ON GNA?
For the time being, the preferred way to access GNA documents
and information resources is via the World-Wide Web[58] (WWW),
a distributed HyperText system (a network of documents
connected by links which can be activated electronically), and
attach to the address
HTTP://UU-GNA.MIT.EDU:8001/UU-GNA/
If you have no clue what WWW is, you can go over the Internet with
TELNET INFO.CERN.CH
which brings you to the WWW Home Page at CERN[60]. You are now using
the simple line mode browser. To move around the Web, enter the
number given after an item. To go to the UU-GNA documents, enter
GO HTTP://UU-GNA.MIT.EDU:8001/UU-GNA/
Most FAQs on GNA are answered on the WWW pages. Especially if you
miss information because you are reading the plain text version of
this FAQ without network link information, you might want to check
out the WWW resources.
The other three ways to get information:
1. The GNA Virtual Campus[61]. In the near future, several virtual
reality meeting places will be connected to form the "GNA
Information Forum". See also (11). Here are the addresses for
MOOs where you will find GNA people meeting and building virtual
classrooms:
Name | <MOO_address> | <meeting_room>
------------------------------------------------------------------
MediaMOO | microworld.media.mit.edu 8888 | Cafe Mozart #5855 (1)
| | Board Room #4308 (2)
BioMOO | bioinfo.weizmann.ac.il 8888 | Woods Clearing #117
GNA-Lab | gnalab.uva.nl 7777 | Woods Clearing #117 (1)
| | Marcus' Office #243 (2)
DUM | erau.db.erau.edu 8888 | GNA Cafe #2156
----
(1) default/curriculum meeting
(2) GNA board meeting
----
To attend as a Guest on either of these, do
telnet <MOO_address>
connect guest
@go <meeting_room>
For example, to join a Saturday curriculum meeting on MediaMOO type
telnet microworld.media.mit.edu 8888
connect guest
@go #5855
For now, all meeting rooms are automagically connected by View
Screens which transmit your words and emotes to all meeting rooms.
If you cannot use telnet with the MOO name, these are the
corresponding numbers:
<MOO_address> IP address
-----------------------------------------
microworld.media.mit.edu 18.85.0.48
bioinfo.weizmann.ac.il 132.76.55.12
gnalab.uva.nl 145.18.70.16
erau.db.erau.edu 155.31.1.1
2. GNA discussion groups on Usenet like alt.uu.future[63] (and
others for special topics)
3. GNA mailing lists[64], available via gopher at
gopher://mcmuse.mc.maricopa.edu:70/
Additionally, the GNA Consultant List[65] contains addresses of GNA
members willing to answer questions via email. Questions may also
be sent to GNA officers[66], project leaders, and other personnel;
it is, however, recommended that you mail a consultant first unless
your inquiry concerns a specific GNA project.
(4) WHAT IF I HAVE ONLY [INTERNET] EMAIL ACCESS?
If you cannot go through telnet, you can still retrieve WWW
documents by raw e-mail: get started by sending a mail to
test-list@info.cern.ch with a line in it saying
send http://uu-gna.mit.edu:8001/uu-gna/
To obtain other documents, proceed in the same way using the "send"
command with a Web address as an argument. The returned mail
contains a list of HTTP references (= Web addresses) at the end. One
mail to this mail robot can contain arbitrarily many "send" command
lines each of which will return one document to you (if the address
was correct). Note that your mail system must have a mail gateway
to the internet mail. Only WWW documents with less than 1000 lines
can be retrieved in this way, but this is true for almost all GNA
documents. See also (16) for help on FTP/Email requests. If
there is a specific document you want but can't get, please contact
<gna-webmaster@tsun.desy.de>.
E.g. to get this FAQ together with complete list of links referred
to in it, send the line
send http://uu-gna.mit.edu:8001/uu-gna/admin/faqs/proto.html
to <test-list@info.cern.ch>
Note that direct telnet is not necessary to access a MOO server if
the link has been established in WWW or in a gopher telnet
item. Many people do have gopher and/or WWW but not direct
telnet. If the MOO is closed for you, but you may still participate
in GNA discussion on the Usenet or on the mailing lists[68] [see
also (3)].
Certain GNA courses[70] may be open to those with limited access.
The access required for a given course will be described in the
course catalog; in case of a question, prospective students are
strongly encouraged to contact course instructors. Even in cases
where MOO access is desired, alternate arrangements may be able to
be made.
(5) WHOM CAN I CONTACT FOR HELP?
See (2) for help concerning a particular GNA
project. General help is on the GNA-talk mailing list[72]. [See
also (3).] General help is available through the
consultants[74], who will answer questions via email. To get
the list of consultants, send Email to
<gna-consultants-admin@mcmuse.mc.maricopa.edu>. Be sure to have
read the latest GNA FAQ as well.
(6) WHO IS DECIDING ANYTHING AT GNA?
The skeletal structure of the GNA is set down in the GNA Bylaws
and documents of incorporation[75]. Included in these documents
are descriptions of the positions of chief officers and the
board of directors, including their duties, and powers. Most of
the GNA's decision making, however, goes on in committee
discussions and in small project teams. This structure ensures
that decisions are made by individuals close to the problems
being addressed, while retaining a coherent organizational
structure. For more information concerning the organization of
this, the world's first virtual corporation, please consult the
Organizational FAQ. (Discussion contributions on the overall
structure of GNA are contained in http://uu-gna
.mit.edu:8001/uu-gna/admin/info/plan.html[76]. Help how to
retrieve Web docs: see (4).
(7) WHERE ARE GNA PROJECTS AND DEVELOPMENT DISCUSSED?
There are working groups for the discussion of GNA curricular
issues[78] and GNA technical projects[79], and the like. These
groups provide an open forum for debate and discussion of new
initiatives, while allowing groups working on different projects
to stay informed of general goings-on. Each group has a mailing
list, and some hold regular meetings.
In addition to these formal group meetings, dicussion of projects
takes place via email between members and discussions on MOOs [see
(3)]. Interested parties are always invited to step forward and
voice their opinion(s) on any GNA initiative.
(8) WHEN WILL GNA INTERNET COURSES ACTUALLY START?
At this stage, the GNA is offering experimental courses. These
should begin to be offered early in 1994. Further developments
will include a curriculum document (the draft[81] (see
(12)) and GNA degree programs, as well as cooperative
ventures with other academic institutions. For the latest
information concerning GNA offerings, consult the GNA Course
Catalog[83].
(9) WHAT IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE FOR GNA ACTIVITIES?
The GNA's target audience is any individual who is interested
in the exchange of ideas and who has access to the internet in
some form. In particular, individuals at small schools who
would like to have access to more diverse offerings and
individuals who are not in school currently but who seek to
expand their knowledge form the core of the GNA's current
target audience. This is expected to change, however, as the
GNA expands its offerings, making it an attractive alternative
to conventional educational institutions in some areas.
(10) WILL GNA COURSES AND ACTIVITIES BE FREE?
The GNA will have, ultimately, a mixture of free and tuition
based offerings. As a non-profit corporation, the GNA is not
out to make money; at the same time, revenues are needed to
support the staff and machines that make the GNA happen. For
this reason, it is likely that some of the GNA's programs will
ultimately require tuition. This will vary on a
course/program basis, and information concerning the status of
any particular course or program will be contained within its
documentation.
(11) WHAT IS THE STATUS OF GNA TECHNICAL PROJECTS?
One of the GNA technical metaprojects[84] is to build a
distributed virtual campus, composed of many MUD
servers. Currently, the most used server for the GNA project
is MOO. For this purpose, a MOO network is being designed,
and many applications for it are being built. Currently
(March, 1993) the GNA net links 6 servers, including 5 MOOs
and 2 MUSEs. This metaproject is badly understaffed. If you
want to cooperate in developing the GNA net, contact Gustavo
Glusman <bmgustav@dapsas1.weizmann.ac.il>
(12) WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THE GNA INTERNET CURRICULUM?
The draft curriculum[85] is under construction, available also
via FTP from ftp.desy.de as file
/pub/uu-gna/curriculum.txt). [See also (7).] In addition,
organizations within and associated with the GNA are free to
have their own curriculum documents.
(13) HOW CAN I HELP GNA?
There are many outlets for those wishing to help the GNA. See
(2) for a complete list and contacts. To propose a GNA course,
use the GNA Course Proposal form [87].
In addition, already established projects often need
assistance; to volunteer, contact a project leader.
Consultantships are always available, as are memberships on GNA
open committees. You can also help simply by becoming a member
of the GNA community: by teaching, attending classes, or by
contributing to one of our ongoing discussions, you can make a
difference. Your first step: Look for the GNA registration
forms. They can be obtained via anonymous FTP[88] from
ftp.desy.de[89] [131.169.10.115]as file
pub/uu-gna/personnel.txt[90]. [See (16) for help on
FTP/Email requests.]
Lest there be any doubt, financial aid is welcome as well. The
GNA is currently run on volunteerism, with time and machines
donated by individuals and institutions worldwide. Those
seeking to make contributions should contact the GNA treasurer,
<mjg@beach.cis.ufl.edu> (see (2)). We will appreciate (and
make full use of) any donation.
(14) HOW WILL I PROFIT FROM DOING WORK FOR GNA?
Working with the GNA offers a variety of benefits. Membership
in the Academy means being part of a worldwide organization
which is on the cutting edge of distance education. In
addition to being given the opportunity to work with
like-minded individuals with a variety of backgrounds,
becoming GNA personnel gives you access to a world of
information, as well as the chance to shape it. More than one
GNA member has put included his work with the GNA on his CV;
the GNA can give you the chance to do work which will be of
value in more ways than one. Best of all, working with the
GNA means helping to further education worldwide, while doing
exactly as much as you want, when you want to do it. The GNA
has unparalleled flexibility as well as unequaled
opportunities.
(15) WHAT ARE GNA'S FUTURE PLANS?
GNA has a long-term plan and a short-term development plan for
1994. These highlight our plans for future development. In
addition, ideas about the GNA's future can be found by
perusing the GNA projects list [see (2)] archives of
discussions [See (5)], and in any conversation with a GNA
member. This is an exciting time for the GNA - and a great
time to become a part of it.
(16) HOW DO I DO ANONYMOUS FTP?
Pretty much everything mentioned here is available by
anonymous FTP. FAQ lists cross-posted to news.answers and
rec.answers can be gotten from rtfm.mit.edu[95] [18.70.0.209],
under /pub/usenet/news.answers or under
/pub/usenet/more.specific.group.name"anonymous FTP" is just a
way for files to be stored where anyone can retrieve them over
the Net. For example, to retrieve the latest version of the
General GNA FAQ, do the following:
> ftp ftp.desy.de /* connect to the site; message follows */
> anonymous /* type this when it asks for your name */
> <your email address> /* type your address as the password */
> cd /pub/uu-gna /* go to the directory you want to be */
> dir /* look at what's there if you wish */
> ascii /* set to ASCII transfer mode */
> get faq.txt /* get the file; case-sensitive */
> quit /* stop this mysterious thing */
If your FTP program complains that it doesn't know where the site
you want to use is, type the numerical address instead of the
sitename:
> ftp 131.169.10.115 /* connect with numerical address */
If you don't have ftp access, you can do two things:
1. send e-mail to test-list@info.cern.ch with the command
send http://uu-gna.mit.edu:8001/uu-gna/admin/faqs/proto.html
in the body of the message. Now you will get the conversion of the
HyperText source of the FAQ which contains many pointers to
World-Wide Web and FTP nodes.
2. send e-mail to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu with the single word
"help" in the body of the message. You will be informed about how to
retrieve FTP stuff via Email.
Here is a sample Email message to a European FTP-Email server to
obtain the GNA FAQ's copy at the site ftp.desy.de.
To: European ftp-email-server <ftpmail@doc.ic.ac.uk>
open ftp.desy.de anonymous marcus@x4u.desy.de
cd pub/uu-gna
mode ascii
get faq.txt
quit
Getting binary files (executables, or any compressed files) is only
slightly more difficult. You need to set binary mode inside FTP
before you transfer the file.
> binary /* set binary transfer mode */
> ascii /* set back to text transfer mode */
FAQs and spoiler lists are generally ascii files; everything else is
generally binary files. Some common extensions on binary files in
archive sites are:
.Z Compressed; extract with uncompress
.tar.Z Compressed 'tape archive'; uncompress then untar or tar -xvf
.gz or .z Gnu gzip; use gunzip (available from prep.gnu.ai.mit.edu)
.sit (Mac) StufIt archive
.zip Extract with Zip or Unzip
.zoo Yet another archive/compress program
.lhe (Amiga) ?
.lzh Lha archive program.
.arj (PC) Arj archive program.
.exe (PC) Sometimes self-extracting archives-just execute them.
.uue or .UUE Transfer as text file; use uudecode to convert to binary
.hqx (Mac) BinHex format; transfer in text mode
Generic help can be found in the FAQs of comp.binaries.<your_system_type>
for how to transfer, extract, and virus-check binary files. (At
rtfm.mit.edu.)
If you can't FTP from your site, use one of the following
ftp-by-mail servers:
ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com
ftpmail@src.doc.ic.ac.uk
ftpmail@cs.uow.edu.au
ftpmail@grasp.insa-lyon.fr
For complete instructions, send a message reading "help" to the server.
If you don't know exactly what you're looking for, or exactly where
it is, there are programs and servers that can help you. For more
info, send e-mail to <mail-server@rtfm.mit> with the body of the
message reading "send usenet/news.answers/finding-sources"
Thanks to Aliza R. Panitz (the "buglady") for this text. Some
modifications wer e made.
